Martis Camp Residence

Truckee, California

Resting on a rugged, boulder strewn, slope above a pristine meadow, the home has been designed for a large family and guests to enjoy mountain living.

As though assembled from the forest itself, a broad steel and timber framed roof shelters the social spaces and connects the secondary private zones. The more modestly scaled secondary forms of vertical board-formed concrete and cedar cladding will weather and age over time with the goal of receding into the tones of the forest. Glazing reaches to the rafters and has been carefully patterned and composed with the structure, while the clerestory drops light into the living spaces from all sizes.

Inside, a massive two story in-situ concrete fireplace dominates the living space. The interior opens to a generous cantilevered terrace overlooking the meadow below.

At every turn, the family is able to experience the forest floor and verticality of the pine and fir trees against the blue sky.
